Where's that drink?

Two months of work (on and off) and it's done: drinking blues is finally out. Maybe you took the time to listen to the demo (for your sake, I hope you didn't), but if you enjoyed the melody or the lyrics spoke to you, you'll certainly enjoy the properly produced version.

Spruce street sign

This track took a bit longer to polish than aftoi me phi (at the time, aftoi me phi still only had an acoustic version). Mainly because it's a much larger production, complete with drums, guitars, piano, brasses, and some orchestral parts. Recording/programming all these parts took a while (I couldn't summon up an orchestra mid-quarantine... In fact, it's somewhat unfair to blame the pandemic on this one, I can't summon an orchestra at all). Mixing the song took even longer (I'm seriously out of practice). But I think it landed on a nice spot (for now). There were some issues, especially with the dynamics of the vocals and bass, that took a while to fix. If you compare the static mix (only volume and panning) with the final version, I think you'll notice how much better the latter is (clearer, more balanced, brighter). Although, to be fair, the difference is not drastic.

I'm not gonna go over the idea or story of the song again, since I already wrote a short release when I posted the demo. If you haven't read it, you should sneak a peak to get some context.

But most importantly, go listen to the track and reach out to tell me what you thought about it by email or on Instagram!

Coming next

The challenge of releasing an EP by the end of the year rages on. For now, it's still not clear where it's gonna land, but I'm thinking it'll be a mash up of styles and rhythms that make sense to me. In that spirit, I've decided to record a little forró next. If you don't know what forró is, you're about to find out... most likely in a month or so, since I need to defend my PhD!
