Fake live with Τsoubalakis

Χαινηδες - Το καπηλειο (cover)

Dimitris (or I should say Tsoubalakis) recently started an amazing YouTube channel where he posts videos playing and singing a mixture of rhythms, from Greek music (traditional and modern) to classical blues tunes. He is a big fan and connoisseur of ρεμπέτικο (rembetiko), an urban music style from 1960s-1970s Greece, and an amazing musician, so I highly recommended you give it a listen!

I tell you this because I (or more precisely, Λουδοβίκος Χαμονάκης) was invited to feature in this week's video. Since I got to choose the song, I picked one of my favorite Greek songs (a bit more modern than the other ones on his channel): "Το καπηλειο" (to kapileio, which means "the tavern") by Χαινηδες (Xainides). You should definitely check out the original because singing in Greek is tricky and I may not have done it full justice!

To kapileio is a song about memories from good times that have past, great parties that have ended, and loves that have gone away. I think this year in particular, we can all relate to the last verse of this song: "in the ruins of my tavern, an old dream of mine remains."

Hopefully, we will all soon be back to our old (metaphorical) taverns!
